Sure... Go Ahead and
Laugh

I am afraid of moths. Yeah, that's right… those little
fluffy, furry bugs that look so much like butterflys. Well, they are not.
They are dangerous, have huge fangs, and are out to get ME!
It all happened when I was a pre-teenager visiting the KOA Campgrounds
in Colorado Springs. Being a native San Diegan, I had no idea what a real
thunder storm was. One had been raging outside, and I was none to happy
about it. Suddenly it all stopped.
I had just stepped outside to look around when this huge orange moth
saw the beacon of light made by the opened door and made a beeline FOR
MY FACE! I ran into the trailer, nearly knocking my mother down and causing
the dogs to scatter and crawl under the table as I ran for the comfort
of the bed in the back.
Well, that darn moth followed me and kept getting in my face! I was screaming
and batting it away, completely freaked out. My stepbrother was laughing
so hard he was sliding out of his seat and under the table. My mom, who
had been standing near the bathroom door, was laughing so hard she went
weak in the knees and slid down the door. My dad was howling, too, as
I ran back through the small trailer and back out the door trying to escape
that insidious bug.
My dad, trying to be helpful (or so he still says), turned off all the
lights in the trailer and turned on the porch light--the porch light under
which I was standing. Yep, the moth followed me out the door and was back
in my face.
Again I ran back into the trailer and my dad, thinking the moth was
history (or so he still says), turned out the porch light and turned on
the lights inside. Yep, that moth followed me back in and we repeated
the procedure except I turned off ALL the lights and told my dad if he
touched the *!@% %$#* lights again I would rip off his $#@*&^% head!
(Mind you, no expletives were deleted, but since everyone was laughing
so hard, I got away with it!)
The moth exited and landed on the wooden table under the awful yellow
light and stayed there as I backed into the dark trailer and closed the
door. My stepbrother and parents were in tears, the whole trailer shaking
from their laughter.Yeah, I provided years of amusement to them with that
tale.
So now I am phobic of moths. The bigger they are, the harder I run.
I almost caused a wreck when a common white moth about 1" long got
into the truck my boyfriend was driving. Thank goodness it wasn't a bat
moth!
So what’s the point of this story and what does it have to do with
business or relieving stress? Nothing… other than laughter is often
the best medicine for stress. I hope I’ve put a smile on your face
today. (And go figure--I am NOT afraid of butterflies!)
RESOURCE: I'm much better
now that I have applied Emotional
Freedom Techniques (EFT) to my moth-phobia. Previously on a
scale of 1-10, my panic would be a 13. Now it’s down to a manageable
5 or 6.
