Book Review: Rule the
Web
How
to Do Anything & Everything on the Internet - Better, Faster, Easier
If the idea of reading another technical manual makes you yawn, let me
assure you that this book by Mark Frauenfelder, founder of bOINGbOING.net,
is NOT that kind of manual.
Reading this book was like spending time with a bag of chocolate chip
cookies. I started out telling myself I'd just read one chapter, and soon
found I'd read the whole book in an evening.
The first page of Chapter One contains a key bit of information for all
entrepreneurs in today's Internet age, and sets the tone for the entire
book: "You no longer need money to have your voice heard by a large
audience; you just need to be interesting." Get our your highlighter,
folks!
Frauenfelder goes on to take readers through the entire website set-up
process, quickly and easily, in a way that makes an experienced web-user
like myself drop their jaw in amazement. He does show a fondness for all
things "Google," which I initially found surprising because
it seemed so easy, but hey, this guy obviously knows what he's talking
about.
Google for everything is part of the beautiful simplicity of his thesis.
From "What's a Domain Name?" and "How Can I Encrypt Email?"
to "How Can I Prevent My PC from Becoming a SPAM Zombie?"--it's
all in here. Looking for tools to clean up your desktop, increase your
RAM or monitor your PC's vitals? Then the "Toolbox" chapter
is for you. Want to look savvy at the local cyber cafe? "The chapter
on "Communications" has you covered.
Frauenfelder's tome includes all of the stuff many of us take for granted
and some of us never thought to ask. You could give this book to someone
who's been stranded alone on an island for the past 20 years, and bring
them up to technological speed in a day or so-this book is that good.
The only thing missing is a sequel, and I hope there is one in the works.
RESOURCE: More interesting than any
of the "For Dummies" books, this book would make a great series.
A vital read for all small business owners, be sure to get your copy of
"Rule
the Web" as soon as possible. Don't borrow one--you'll
want to highlight and earmark almost every page! Frauenfelder's blog keeps
the conversation going at http://RuleTheWeb.net.
