Quick Stress Busters for the Office
“I
am so stressed, I could explode!”
Have you ever felt this way or heard someone else say this?
Well, here are some simple Yoga exercises you can practice to help relieve
stress. No, you won’t have to put your legs around your head! These
are very easy to do--so easy you won’t have to leave your desk to
experience the benefits these exercises bring!
Breathing
This is always the first thing I do, and it helps to calm
me down.
- Turn off the “interruption” machines and sit in a comfy
position.
- Inhale for the count of four.
- Hold for a count of seven.
- Exhale for a count of eight, making a whooshing sound. Breathe deeply
into your belly for the full benefits.
Finger Stretch
- With wrists straight and palms facing down, stretch the fingers and
thumb outward.
- Exhale and bend the joints in the fingers (middle and end joints).
- Inhale, relax and repeat once.
Hand Roll
With hands facing up, and fingers and thumb stretched out, inhale, exhale
and roll the hands and fingers so they face the floor (this can be done
with hands resting on a desk or table).
Shoulder and Arm Stretch
With the palms facing outward, exhale and straighten your arms and interlace
your fingers. Hold for five breaths. Notice any changes in your body.
Repeat twice.
Back Stretch
- Slowly and carefully raise your right arm with the palm facing forward.
- Bend your elbow as if you were trying to reach your hand down the
middle of your back and give yourself a back scratch.
- As you exhale, apply gentle downward pressure to the elbow with your
left hand. Continue for about five minutes.
- Relax and notice and changes in your back and triceps. Repeat on opposite
side.
There are just a few of the many exercises you can do to relieve desk
stress. Remember to keep things simple!
