It's hard to believe, but there are still lots of business owners who
haven't heard about Virtual Assistants, those independent professionals
who like nothing better than alleviating the administrative aches and
pains of the world. From Cheryl Harless this week, meet one such fellow:
Gary the Gizmo Guru...
To your success!

Gary the Gizmo Guru
Gary
was the Gizmo Guru. He even had the awards and accolades to prove it!
Twenty years of working in the gizmo and gadget industry had given him
the skills and industry knowledge to sell gizmos better than anybody.
The problem was his employer, Godfrey's Gizmos & Gadgets, wanted him
to sell an equal number of gadgets. And he hated gadgets!
So Gary took some business courses and opened up Gary's Gizmos working
from his home office. He had a few contacts, and was busy making more
every day. Gary knew that relationships were the key to selling Gizmos.
Gary also wore all the hats. He was the marketing executive, the bookkeeper,
even his own I.T. guy, and he performed all the administrative stuff,
too.
Soon enough, Gary's fledging business began to suffer. Gary realized
there was just no way he could continue to do everything, be everything,
in his own business. There weren't enough hours in the day. It seemed
he never had a chance to relax or see his wife, Gwen, anymore. He really
began to miss Gidget, his administrative assistant at his old job. He
had never truly appreciated all the skill and hard work she had put into
keeping him organized and on track. He thought, "Well, I can find
my own administrative assistant to work for me."
Gary remembered what his business courses taught him: Businesses that
hire employees have a better chance of succeeding than those run by solopreneurs.
He went back to his books, and looked up the chapter on employees which
referred him to the IRS and his state's web sites. He was dismayed to
learn that the cost of hiring an employee was far more than just the employee's
salary. There was insurance, taxes and more that nearly quadrupled what
he thought an employee would be paid. And when he learned that highly
skilled administrative assistants were paid far above minimum wage, he
knew he couldn't go that route. As he looked around his small office,
he thought, "and where would I put her anyway?"
Dejected, wondering how he was going to get support in his business,
Gary sat down at the computer to commiserate with his online buddies.
"What am I going to do? I need someone sharp and skilled, but I can't
afford an employee. And I don't have enough work to make it worth someone's
while, even if I did have somewhere for them to sit in the first place!"
"Haven't you heard about Virtual Assistants?" asked Gail, a
business coach.
"Virtual Assistant? What's that?" Gary asked.
"Virtual Assistants are highly skilled administrative professionals
who work with small business owners like you. They take care of the administrative
stuff so you can spend more time on things that bring in money. As business
owners themselves, they work with their clients as professional administrative
consultants so you won't have any of the costs and expenses associated
with employees. And most Virtual Assistants have plans where you pay a
simple monthly fee for a set number of hours--you don't pay for more than
you need."
Gary couldn't believe what he was hearing. Could there actually be a
solution? He eagerly pressed her for more information. The coach told
Gary about the wonderful group of administrative professionals at the
Virtual Assistance Chamber of Commerce (VACOC). She had checked out the
site herself, and knew the VACOC had a directory where Gary could find
a highly qualified Virtual Assistant to take his administrative burdens
off his hands.
Gary was so happy. This was exactly the solution he was looking for!
He wished he could give Gail a bear hug. He thanked her, and rushed over
to the VACOC to find his ideal Virtual Assistant.
