Conquer Stress by Being Present
How
many times have you worried about not getting that big project finished
by deadline? Are you stressed about money, health issues, or relationships?
Are you staying up late just to get everything done?
Stress is a killer, literally. Excessive and long-term stress
can lead to high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, ulcers, irritability,
depression, sleep problems, increased substance use, and much more.
It’s true; we all feel stress in our lives. Sometimes
stress pushes us to new heights and new opportunities, and sometimes,
it makes us physically ill. If stress is adversely affecting you, it may
be time to regain control over your life. Don’t be a victim of stress.
Counteract its negative impact by simply being in the moment.
Most of us spend the majority of our time thinking about
either the past or the future. We worry and fret about events that have
already gone by and circumstances that are long gone. Or, we waste time
pondering the future and worrying about events that haven’t happened
yet – and may actually never happen.
The next time you find yourself stressing over a past or
future event, stop your thoughts immediately, and take three deep breaths.
You cannot hold onto that stressful thought and breathe deeply at the
same time. If your mind bounces around from one thing to another, internally
shout, “STOP!” and take a few more deep breaths. This will
bring you back into the present. Pay attention to your breathing for that
moment.
Practice being present. Make it your mantra, if you need
to. If you really stop and think about it, the present moment is all you
have – the past is gone and the future hasn’t happened yet.
Be right here, right now, as often as you are able. Eventually it will
become a habit and you will find yourself – more often than not
– noticing the way the trees dance in the wind, the unique sound
of your child’s giggle, or the interwoven colors in your pet’s
fur.
Being present gives you an often-overlooked perspective and encourages
you to be aware. There are millions of special and precious moments that
go unnoticed every day, simply because we’re too busy and stressed
out to slow down and breathe. Don’t miss your own special moments;
remember to breathe and stay in the present.
