LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling
Need
to create a disc for that special meeting? Backing up files to CD or DVD?
Just finished uploading scanned photos of friends and family you want
to share?
Well, have I got a nifty tool for you! It's a CD/DVD burner
technology called LightScribe. It's the latest technology that uses a
special disc drive and special media to burn labels directly onto CDs
and DVDs. Because the labels are laser-etched — not printed —
there are none of those icky labels to peel off, and no smudged ink or
illegible handwriting.
The labels can be pretty much anything you want them to
be (except multi-colored). You can use photos, text and artwork, or cut
down on the time to create the image by using text only. Let your imagination
run wild! Discs comes in a variety of colors, but the laser printed image
will be in grayscale, so the higher the contrast, the better the image
will produce on your LightScribe CDs.
If you love playing with graphics, you can create to your
heart's desire. If creating original graphics is not your thing, don't
worry; there are tons of templates with even more being created daily
for download.
It works like this:
- You burn your data (music, video, photos, etc.) in the LightScribe
drive.
- When your disc has completed burning, open the drive and flip it over.
- Burn your LightScribe label. The same drive does double duty!
How does it work? According to the information on the LightScribe Web
site:
The laser inside a CD/DVD disc drive with LightScribe technology
focuses light energy onto a thin dye coating on the label side of the
disc. Only LightScribe media has this special coating. The light from
the laser causes a chemical change in the dye coating that shows up
on the disc. WIth laser precision, the drive renders the text and images
that you created for the label.
The CD/DVD burner is not a lot more expensive than other drives, and
LightScribe offers the option of either internal or external models. You
also need to purchase the special media. That is where you will see a
bigger price difference. The LightScribe discs are not cheap, but then
neither are labels and computer ink so in the end analysis, the price
might be more comparable than you think. You can still create DVDs and
CDs with regular media with a LightScribe burner, you just cannot create
the label on them.
Finally, be aware that this is NOT a fast process. It takes 15 - 20 minutes
to burn a label, and it's not really something you want to do while you
are working on other things on your computer. But for a beautiful, polished
and unique look on CD gifts, products and special/important information,
LightScribe labeling is a standout.
