5 Steps to Start Delegating
Are
you happy with the rate your business is growing? Do you realize there
is potential for making your business stronger and life much easier by
offloading non-core work? Do you resist because seeking assistance sometimes
smacks of giving up power and control?
This of it this way: everyone delegates. We seek
the help of a neighbor with sewing skills; we hire a caterer to serve
a reception; we enlist our spouse to pick up groceries... Sure, we can
handle these activities by ourselves, but things get done so much faster
and more efficiently when we have help. Who doesn't want to save time,
conserve energy and avoid doing those things we don't do well?
If delegating happens at a subconcious level in our personal
lives, why is it so difficult in our businesses? Many people simply don't
know where to start. One of the best ways to begin is to take a pen and
a pad of paper and track every single one of your business activities
for at least one week. Then, look over your list and begin analyzing and
flagging:
- What tasks, jobs, activities or projects can be delegated?
Look for repetitive, non-management activities that you complete frequently.
- Is the success of your business dependent on you completing
those tasks? Your business depends on you spending 80% of your
time as the business owner on core revenue-generating activities. Any
behind-the-scenes, non-core administrative work can be delegated.
- What tasks do you hate doing? If you hate certain
activities in your business, they simply won't get done because you'll
be busy procrastinating on them. These tasks should be among the first
to be delegated.
- What tasks do you not do well? If you spend your
time on activities you don't have the skills, knowledge or proper software
for, you are dragging your business down. Delegate anything that can
be done better and more efficiently by someone else.
- Begin to delegate. Select a small group of non-critical
activities from your list for your Virtual Assistant to take care of.
As your comfort level increases, begin to delegate more. Soon you'll
be delegating like a pro!
Partnering with a Virtual Assistant provides a simple delegation solution
for many of your administrative activities. Through the experience of
working together, a collaborative, trusting relationship will develop
between you and your Virtual Assistant. You'll gain a work partner and
trustworthy consultant who will have practical ideas and suggestions for
your business while freeing you to spend more time on planning, managing
and creating in your business.
