Keeping Stress at Bay: How to Track Your Business Expenses

Quickbooks Simple Start 2008April 15th is behind us. No more worrying about tax time again until next year, right? Wrong. As a small business owner, it's important not to neglect the task of keeping track of your day-to-day expenses. Here's a scenario I'm sure sounds familiar...

You make a quick run to your local office supply store to purchase some printer paper and ink cartridges. As soon as you leave the store, you stuff that receipt into your pocket or purse. Instead of recording your purchase as soon as you get back to your home office, I'm willing to bet you often are guilty of putting that receipt into a pile on your desk to be dealt with later. Before you know it, tax time is upon you and you have no idea how much you can deduct toward office expenses.

Stress time! You end up rifling through stacks of receipts tallying up how much you spent over the last year and what category the expenses fall under. Let's face it... you are unorganized and need a little push to regain some sense of organization.

I admit I am a real task master and do what I can to avoid any type of last minute crunch. Recording my office expenses is one area I won't let slide. Here's what you, too, can do to help alleviate the stress of your year-end business financials...

If you aren't already using business accounting software, I recommend that you download the free version of Quickbooks Simple Start 2008. This program is packed with all the tools you'll need to keep your business financials streamlined and organized. Every time you make a business purchase, simply log the date, vendor, category and amount into the program and it will spit out your balance.

You can keep track of all your expenses, from purchasing supplies to paying for Web hosting. Filing your taxes will be much easier; all you'll have to do is open up Quickbooks, click on "Record Expenses" and it will show your entire lists of expenses for the past year, organized and at your fingertips.

RESOURCE: Quickbooks Simple Start 2008, the essential tools you need to track your small business sales and expenses.
